cd ‘Old Heart’s Wisdom’

‘Old Heart’s Wisdom’ is a collection of 15 compositions (by me) based on James Joyce’s Pomes Penyeach. The cd is for sale at webshop https://artistories.net/product/old-hearts-wisdom. Proceeds go to Facetten van de kunst foundation, to enable more art projects in the future.

‘The Flowering Branch’, 5 songs for soprano Caroline Stam and string quartet, is based on the early poems in the collection, looking back to Dublin, and at the vulnerability of youth. In ‘Old Heart’s Wisdom’, 5 songs for baritone Matthijs Mesdag, string quartet and percussion give voice to the Pomes written from 1917, under the shadow of war.  Dutch translations spoken by Julia Henneman connect the songs.

The Pomes Ensemble, heard in the two song cycles: Lis Perry and Carolien Heinen, violins; Julia Barnes, viola; Mariëtte Gort, cello; Che-Sheng Wu, percussion.

4 of the Pomes are featured in ‘Joyce in Lust (Love)’, with vocalist Han Buhrs and percussionist Yung-Tuan Ku improvising around music fragments composed and played by Julia Barnes.

Joyce on the Road, the Pomes Penyeach Project in 2018

The Art of James Joyce: 16 June 2018, Witte Zaal, Desguinlei 25, Antwerp. Joyce in Lust (Love) will be on the musical programme from 1 pm on, and Julia Henneman will help audience members to find their favorite word from the Pomes Penyeach in the installation/performance WordWeighter.

Joyce in Lust (Love)–Han Buhrs, Yung-Tuan Ku and Julia Barnes

WordWeighing with Julia Henneman

The music and artworks surrounding the Pomes in our project will be carried forth to new settings in 2018. We look forward to adorning the book presentation of translators Henkes and Bindervoet’s ‘Verse Piperstuk’ on Bloomsday (June 2018, location to be announced). And we are planning to take part in the Joyce Festival now being planned for mid-October 2018 in the Oosterkerk. And in the meantime we have asked Virag Dezso of MAPA/musicality of movement to add her interpretation to Joyce in Lust (Love) to create Joyce Moves in Lust.

The menu below is available for performance, so if you are interested, get in touch!

The Flowering Branch, songs for soprano Caroline Stam and string quartet, interlaced with the Dutch translations performed by Julia Henneman.

Tutto e Sciolto (2017!), Tilleagh, Rain on Rahoon, Simples and Their Young Hearts

Lis Perry and Emi Ohi Resnick, violins    Julia Barnes, viola  Mariëtte Gort, cello

A word about the words, Erik Bindervoet and Robbert-Jan Henkes talk about translating the Pomes into Dutch.

Joyce in Lust (Love), suite for vocalist Han Buhrs, percussionist Yung-Tuan Ku and violist Julia Barnes. Quasi-composed by Julia Barnes, magically improvised by Han Buhrs and Yung-Tuan Ku, this is a performance that changes every time. 3 musicians from three different walks of musical life combine their strengths for this adventurous rendering of Tutto e Sciolto, Flood, In the Mirror at Midnight and A Prayer.

Weighing his Words. Julia Henneman creates a performance with the unique words written by Joyce and re-invented by Bindervoet and Henkes.

Old Heart’s Wisdom, songs for baritone Matthijs Mesdag, percussion and string quartet, interlaced with a performance by Julia Henneman speaking the Dutch translations.

Che-Sheng Wu, percussionist, joins the quartet in this cycle.

Light and darkness: James Joyce, W.E. Henley, Matthew Arnold

‘darkness of fear around us

darkness of fear above,

and in my heart, a deep unending

Ache of love’–James Joyce in ‘On the beach at Fontana’

‘Fill a glass with golden wine,

and the while your lips are wet

Set their perfume unto mine,

And forget–‘ W.E. Henley in ‘Love blows as the wind blows’

‘Listen! you hear the grating roar

Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,

At their return, up the high strand,

Begin, and cease, and then again begin,

With tremulous cadence slow, and bring

The eternal note of sadness in.’–Matthew Arnold, Dover Beach

The poets speak: Light in times of darkness

Words from the poets whose work inspires the music in our program Licht in donkere tijden:

‘darkness of fear around us

darkness of fear above,

and in my heart, a deep unending

Ache of love’–James Joyce in ‘On the beach at Fontana’

‘Fill a glass with golden wine,

and the while your lips are wet

Set their perfume unto mine,

And forget–‘ W.E. Henley in ‘Love blows as the wind blows’

‘Listen! you hear the grating roar

Of pebbles which the waves draw back, and fling,

At their return, up the high strand,

Begin, and cease, and then again begin,

With tremulous cadence slow, and bring

Licht in donkere tijden

Licht in donkere tijden–muziek, kunst, dichtkunst rond WO I.

George Butterworth stierf in Frankrijk tijdens WWI.

Licht in donkerte staat hierin centraal.

Light in times of darkness

March 6, 2016 at 4 pm

Papenpad 13, Zaandam in the hidden Old-Catholic church.

In the exhibition and performance Light in times of darkness, artists and audience reflect on works of beauty sparked in troubled times.  Poet James Joyce and composer George Butterworth created very different art a hundred years ago, the one dark and despairing, the other joyous, throbbing with life. Joyce’s Nightpiece and On the beach at Fontana, set to music by Julia Barnes, start the musical program. Samuel Barber set the deeply questioning Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold, in the interbellum.

Tonie van Marle’s series ‘Dodengang’ brings us into an abstract vision of the foxholes of WWI, where more and more is removed from the canvas until light can shine through. Her reflecting sculptures from the Bioptics series allow the viewer to play with perspective and light from all angles. Translators Erik Bindervoet and Robbert-Jan Henkes will make a translation of Joyce’s Nightpiece for Facetten, that serves as inspiration for a short film by Hannah Zwennes, also shown at the performance.

Visitors will have time to view the artworks and talk to the artist and performers before the music program begins. The venue contributes a special layer to the event, having been used for secret Catholic services in centuries past when these were forbidden. The theme ‘Light in times of darkness’ is especially appropriate in a secret place of worship.
